Economical Usage of Printer Ink and Toner

Printing your documents or images is never cheap. It doesn’t matter if you use a laser or an inkjet printer. But there are ways that can help you maximize the quantity of printing outputs you can make in just one ink or toner cartridge. If you want to get more out of your printer cartridge, you actually need to utilize your printer regularly and not let it sit on your table without being utilized for a week or more. You can also adjust your default settings and change some of the usual ways you operate your printer. Below are some of these strategies in detail.

First thing you can do to save on printing is to check at what print setting your machine is operating in. Instead of the “normal” or “standard” setting, you can choose the lowest setting on your printer like “draft” or “economode.” You’ll see different terms for this across the different brands of printers, but it should be the lowest or most economical setting. In this way, you can just have the draft output for all your general purposes of printing. You can just change the setting to the higher quality for documents that need darker or standard printing like formal letters and reports for submission, presentation materials, etc.

For laser printers, you can change their density setting. If you lower the density level of your printing, you’ll get a lighter print and, of course, use less toner. For various printer brands, you’ll have various ways of doing this. In some printers, you can manipulate the print quality through the control panel menu. There are also others, especially older printers, that would need you to change the density level through a device near the toner cartridge. It would be best for you to check the manual of your printer for this.

Another economical way to print is to switch to black-and-white or grayscale mode, instead of using full-color printing every time. This will help you save up on your color ink or toner.

Contrary to what many people might think, not using your inkjet printer will only cost you more compared to using it regularly. If your printer is idle for a couple of weeks or so, the ink will dry out. You’ll then need to do some of the cleaning instructions specified by your printer. This procedure will use ink that you should have used in your documents and other materials that you need.

These are some general tips you can easily apply on your printer. It would be ideal for you to check first your printer manual to know more about how your machine uses its ink or toner. This will also give you more ideas on how you can save more in printing.

Education and Technology Upgrades

Technology in academia does not need to be as expensive as many think. Many school districts rely on a consulting firm to design a custom solution for their needs. Unfortunately, they often get a cookie-cutter solution that has been copied and pasted from the last 10 designs, does not meet their specific needs, and often wastes 10 – 20% of the total cost.

I highly recommend a school district hire a talented IT manager that is very diverse. This manager should be able to get their feet wet in database, networking, security systems, CATV, VoIP, and more. However, it’s not necessary for them to master everything. This is where its a good idea to have a specialist in software and networking. Once this foundation is in place, your team can work together to decide what they need, want, and don’t want.

When the IT team has a pretty good idea about what upgrades are required, it’s time to contact a company that not only designs the systems, but also has actual experience installing the systems. Many school districts make the mistake of hiring an “engineer” that specializes in voice, data, and fiber cabling to design the audio/video, networking, and security systems. This is NOT their field of expertise. This is like going to a chiropractor to perform surgery on your foot. Don’t get me wrong; they are very good at cable design. However, the school district deserves more experience. Let’s be honest; technology grants are not awarded every year. It’s very important to spend them wisely.

When you are contacting companies to provide a solution, it’s a good idea to limit the contractors to about three. One contractor should be able to install the audio/video, CATV, paging, and security systems. Another can handle the phones and networking. Lastly, you need a good cabling company. Although the networking and phone contractors can offer cabling, it’s possible their price will be a little higher than a company that only specializes in cabling. The benefit to giving the network contractor the cabling work is it’s probably going to get done with less problems. If you manage to find a company in your area that is talented enough and cost effective to provide a turn key solution for the entire project, then you have it made. There will be much less management and coordination problems on your part. It’s OK if that contractor needs to sub-contract out a few simple things such as commissioning of the security system. This is completely understandable so long as they are not sub-contracting the majority of the project. Continue Reading

Electronic Design Methods

Idea Conception and Realisation

Many people dream of creating their own electronic devices for personal use or with a wider scope intending to invent something that maybe useful to other people. It takes an electronics design specialist to see through the projects conception to take it on to the next stage. Any ideas at this stage must be sketched out with detailed diagrams and a written project brief that contains the essence of the projects idea.

Feasibility Study

Sometimes it is difficult to judge the viability of an electronics design project and its potential as a workable product, but any electronics design team must have good management that can direct what is feasible and what project aims are not realistic. This must be done with a solid grasp of the manufacturing process in all of its key stages: for example; analogue and digital circuit design, embedded microcontrollers, Printed Circuit Board (PCB) creation, outer casing plastic mouldings, touch screen control functionality and/or any needed embedded firmware. If the project is deemed feasible it will then be broken up into certain key stages, each key stage identifying every element of the intended project or device as well as a perceived build time.

Initial Planning and Design

It is the main aim of this stage to assemble all of the rough design sketches and to transform those materials into a workable design plan that adheres to the goals and timescales of the projects key stages. This plan must contain all of the areas of design from any outer casing or moulds needed to the devices internal electronics and mechanics, schematic circuit design, schematic capture and PCB layout.

Final Design and Final Manufacturing Plans

Once a project idea is fully planned out it will take a dedicated engineer with specialist knowledge to document and plan each of the key stages of the production, this is then given to the project manager. Many projects nowadays depend upon multiple elements; it is the project manager’s duty to use his or her specialist design team members to their potential by allocating work to the relevant person. For example a PCB designer should be used to create all the plans and prototype boards for internal electronics, a plastics moulding expert should be used to produce detailed plans for the control elements or external features, GSM and communications specialists should in respect be asked to contribute their knowledge to any relevant issues, and so on. Now the detailed design process should be near its completion. Continue Reading
